Hoky Poky II

Installation & partizipative Performance - Galerie Gugging

“Hoky Poky II” by MUELLER-DIVJAK, Galerie Gugging

„Through meditation and art, we can connect with our mother earth and reaffirm our cooperative nature, recognizing the environment as part of ourselves.“ (Sulak Sivaraksa)

Hoky-Poky II by MUELLER-DIVJAK occurs as temporary architecture for the senses as it enters into dialogue with the exhibited works of art brut and allows a different view, a changed perception. As a kind of  spiritual scenography the installation deals with outer and inner worlds. Directing the attention towards conscious breathing and moving it helps creating instantaneous space for the reconnection with nature and possible healing as well as magical and inspiring processes.

In the material as well as the subtle center of the artwork stands the stinging (Urtica), which in English is called: hoky-poky, devil’s leaf, devil’s plaything, hidgy-pidgy, Indian spinach, seven-minute itch, stinging nice or true nettle. – Just as diverse as these terms, are the modes of action of the plant.

The stinging nettle is sturdy and robust, thrives in barren areas, on fallow land, and in intermediate civilizational zones. It is widespread almost all over the world; as a crop, it is often ignored, and is today considered a “weed.” Its far-reaching effects as a – cost-effective and ubiquitous – medicinal plant threats sometimes to fall into oblivion. The stinging nettle has cultural significance since ancient times and has found its way into myths and customs.

For the show stinging nettles have been collectively harvested and processed in the vicinity of the gallery, and on the grounds of the museum Gugging. They are visibly and factorial perceptible in the gallery: On the one hand in the form of a so called “nettle walk”, leading through the gallery – based on the idea and practice of walking meditation (Jong-Grom) –, on the other as smellscape, a specially composed bouquet consisting of nettle hydrolat, enriched with the essence of other locally collected resins and herbs.

The more consciously we set our steps, the louder we hear the crackling and rustling under our feet, the clearer we see again. It smells like meadow, wood, and moss …
